The Shed

The Community Woodwork Shed is based at Douglas House, Cairns, and provides a space to learn new skills and get creative. It is a place to build connections, be productive, have purpose, and reach goals.

Our awesome items

Why should I support The Shed?

Each purchase goes towards helping vulnerable people in Cairns. The Shed is part of Douglas House, a supported housing service for people experiencing or at risk of homelessness.

You are supporting residents to learn new skills and take the next step toward independence. The Shed is an empowering space for residents and the Cairns community, providing the opportunity to build furniture and develop new skills.

The creation of furniture plants the seeds of hope for the transition from homelessness into housing.

Welcoming all

There is no pressure and no skills are required to join in. The Shed is a safe space where we build more than furniture, it is a place where relationships and hope are built.

Slow and steady

Our induction focuses on safety, introduces tools and equipment, and helps build skills. Each person starts by making a few simple pieces - a spoon, spatula and a bread board.

Changing Tides Group

The Changing Tides Group grew from Shed participants who wanted to expand their opportunities, be creative and maybe products to sell.

"For me it is therapy and gives me an escape."
