Day 40

23.3 kms yesterday got me over the finish line. 1001 kilometres completed. Apple Health estimates this equates to 1,275,000 steps and 352,000 kilojoules of active energy. No wonder I have been hungry. Manny walked the last 8 ks of the challenge. He has covered about 330 ks himself.

Before I get all speechy on you I would like to express my condolences to donor Belinda Allchin whose sister Christine passed away last week. RIP Christine

At the start I had no Idea how much we could get in donations and nominated $10,000. At the time of writing we have had 95 donations from 90 donors.  I had expected to do everything myself but thankfully my sister Karen appointed herself cheerleader in chief and did an amazing job of keeping you all entertained and shaking the can at the same time. We didn't quite reach 10k but I am thrilled that we have made over $7300 this total would have been far less without Karen's help. Who knows there may be more donations in the coming days.

A big thank you to our Day 40 donors. Elke and Miles Chester, Hamish Boalch, Kodi Boalch, Debbie Grah, Kylie Walker and Patrick Chandra.

I could write thank yous forever but I would like to single out a few people who may or may not know how much they lifted me. Sandy Olsen your comment on mind games was spot on and stayed with me throughout. Adrian, Troy and Clint it meant so much to have you on board. Katherine, Wendy, Suzie, Brenda, Anne and Jacki you liked and encouraged everything except my festy foot photos! Mum the provider of cakes, cookies and pride in her kids. Simone, Hamish and Kodi thanks for supporting this madness and putting up with my substantial absences and fatigue.

Finally a big thank you to all who donated. Without donations this would have just been a long walk!

Day 39

We finished day 39 with 978 kms completed and a leisurely 22 kms to get on day 40. We did not have any new donations on day 39 but there are some donations promised when the 1000 kms is completed.

Day 38

A lunch invitation meant I did not quite achieve my stated aim of 36 kms for the day. 31.5 is still respectable and leave 41 kms to be covered over the last two days.

Our Day 38 Donors include David McBeath, Rebecca Collard and Bill O'Grady. Thank you all for lifting our donations to $6,782.

Day 37

26.1 kms covered on day 37 leaving us with 72 to get in 3 days. The plan is another big day today to make the last two days as easy as possible.

We had quite a few donations yesterday so big thanks to my sister in law Brianna Lanzon, old mates David Farrar, Matt Smith and Jamie Winter. Thanks also to more recent friends Lynne and Rob Taylor and Rebecca Taylor. You are all legends!

Donations are welcome at https://act.missionaustralia.com.au/fundraisers/richardboalch/1000-in-forty

A special mention to previous contributor Michael Adams. Michael has a number of historical podcasts including one I have been binge listening too for the last 200 kms or so. If you love history check out https://forgottenaustralia.com

Day 36

A record 40 kms added yesterday dragged us from 13kms behind target to 2 kms in front. There are 98ks left to walk in 4 days?.

Big thanks to Anna Lise Phillips our day 36 donor.

Day 35

Day 35 16.3 kms added leaving us with 138 kms to cover in 5 days. 27.6 per day. A big day today will steady the ship.

Many thanks to yesterday’s contributors Dean & Megs, Renata Consiglio-Lloyd, Michael Howorth & Jason Steley. Deano aka Dean O’Hara is a rare breed a financial Planner that puts his clients interests first I have included a link if you want a chat.
https://www.oharapartners.com.au

Today I am feeling  a little Jim Morrison. 1 part let it roll baby roll and 1 part the futures uncertain but the end is always near.

Day 34

Day 34. A lap around the lake with Karen Boalch, my cheerleader in chief. Kaz put up a nice pic of us yesterday.

I spotted this presumably red belly black snake (I wasn’t real keen to check its belly) on the track on the way home.

Big thanks to Belinda Allchin for her donation on day 34.

Day 33

The initial concept for this challenge was the million metre month. 1000 ks in thirty days however when  I started preparing I soon realised that an average of 33,3 kms per day in addition to my normal work and family commitments was too much. So the challenge became 1000 in forty. Saturday’s are always the hardest day to hit my 25 kilometre goal and day 33 was no different. The good news is Sunday has always been my best day. We start day 34 seven kms behind target but have no fear. I’ve got this!

Many thanks to Jim Kelly for his donation. We are closing in on $6000 raised for Mission Australia.

Day 32

A Corona Virus crisis meeting delayed our visitor last night allowing me to rack up a lot more kms than expected.  We start today at 799 against the day 32 target of 800.

Our day 32 donation came from New York thank you Sharon Allan

Day 31

Catch up day on day 31 left us 2 kms ahead of target. 2 laps around the lake with an icy wind blowing on the eastern side. I am off to a reasonable start this morning but we have guests this evening and I will probably come up short today.

Many thanks to double dipping donors of day 31 Wendy Frew and Katherine Bean. When I started this challenge I never imagined that people would donate more than once. We now have 4 fantastic double dippers.

Day 30

Not enough kms on day 30 but the diary is clear today and We will be back in front at the end of day 31.

Day 29

27.7 kms walked on day 29. Leaving us with a 3 k buffer. This could be in jeopardy on day 30 with work and P&C commitments leaving little time for walking.

Many thanks to our day 29 donors. Carrie Spinks and Tracey Clarke.

Day 28

700 down against a target of 700. Reverting to Midnight Oil quotes I’m back on the border line.

Day 28 was a fantastic and somewhat unexpected day for donations which broke the 5k mark. Thank you Dave Rowe, David Spencer, Mick Maher and Serpent and Dove Applied Magnetics.

Serpent and Dove is an industrial Magnetics business run by Adrian Heard. Adrian made his donation free of any expectation but I will give him a little plug anyway.

If your idea of a fridge magnet is something that can pick up the fridge or if you want to explore any other type of industrial application have a look at Serpent and Dove.

Day 27

As we near the end of the challenge it is increasingly important to be ahead of the target unless I want to be pushing for 50 kms on the last day... 32.3 kms yesterday got me 4 ks in front with 13 days to go and I am hoping to build a bigger buffer to hopefully ease the work load in the final stages.

Narrabeen Lake was at its best yesterday. Pictures will be posted on Facebook

Day 26

Day Whaaaat? So my sister puts up a post about the yellow line and I immediately fall behind it. 646 ks chasing 650.. Thanks to Jackie Gambrell for donating. A donation today will mean we have equaled our longest run off donations which is 8 days....

Two weeks to go.

Day 25

Work and the fallout from the great ice cream conspiracy left me short of time to complete 25ks today. Still 23.6 kms is not a disaster. A big thanks to Joan Peters for her donation today.

Day 24

A quiet day for my calendar gave me the opportunity to get some walking in early. Home to put the slow cooked pork roast on. A small walk once it was on and 4ks with Manny to cap it off. Finished the day 3 ks ahead of the curve  603 ks completed against day 24 target of 600.

Sad news once I got home. My former colleague  had a workplace accident in July and has since passed away the funeral is today. Rest in Peace David "Champo" Lindsay.

Day 23

It may be the hangover from the big Sunday walk or realisation that having done the first 500 I have another 500 to do. I just wasn’t feeling it yesterday but managed to scrape 26 kms together to square up the ledger 575 kms walked against the day 23 target of 575.  I am feeling better today off and am looking to get ahead of the target.

Big thanks to Sandra Bonello for her day 23 donation.

Day 22

At the end of our 22nd day we are 1km behind our day 22 target of 550 kilometres. Manny put in a massive 14.54 kms with me yesterday and showed no signs of tiredness. Special thanks to those who donated on day 22. Lucy Harris chipped in all the way from Kyrgyzstan (thank you spell check) where she is doing volunteer work. Peter Lanzon, Pete is family, thank you. Jackie Brighton who was my sisters besty in primary school.also donated. Thank you Jackie.

Thank you of the day goes to all of our Doctors, Nurses, Caregivers and Health Professionals who are doing everything they can to heal the sick and protect vulnerable people. Thanks also to the police, the ADF and even State Emergency Services who have all had their part to play in making our country as safe as possible. I am stunned that some people think its ok to verbally abuse or physically assault emergency workers who put themselves at risk to keep us safe.

Day 21

20.5 Ks on Day 21 I will make up the shortfall today. The highlight of Day 21 was that it was the best day for donations so far. A Big thank you to all of our Day 21 Donors  Gayle Mitchell Troy Bryant, Gillian O'Mara, Amanda Mowbray, Kathryn Hanes, Sharon M, Jason and Nick Alexander. Lets not forget Sandra Olsen who gave a second donation for reaching the halfway mark.

Troy is our fourth donor from the Narrabeen High Class of '88. Vanessa is a current teacher at Narrabeen High and has been mentioned in this Blog previously. Thanks to all who gave words of encouragement on Facebook you all warmed my heart yesterday!

Day 20

The day dawned with 461 kms done chasing a day 20 target of 500ks. The 26.5 k morning walk  took me past my normal Sunday morning haunt The Cromer Dome (St Mathews Farm Reserve) where I hit up the the players of the Warringah Touch Football association for some donations. This gave me the platform I needed and I took Manny out at 10pm and finished the goal to have 500ks down on Day 20. The Day 18 Donation from Ruth Pursehouse caused a minor social media  sensation as we came to the realisation that everyone who grew up in Elanora had Ruth as their preschool teacher!

Belinda Lawton got the donations moving this morning and my old colleague Rebecca Brown just chimed in as I was writing this update. Many thanks to you both.

So having completed day 20 its time to run through a few highlights in no particular order.

1. over 50 donations to date totalling $3193 donations are set to go parabolic over the next 20 days.
2. Blistergate. Sorry Wifey
3. Penrith may or may not have a wild panther but Warriewood has definitely got a fox.
4. Pennywise the killer clown sighting near Warriewood Cinema. Or maybe it was just a stray balloon from a children's party creepily positioned in a ditch.

Day 19

19.9 ks today we need 39ks to reach our day 20 goal of 500. No promises but I will give it a shot

Day18

At 5.30pm I had 4ks to my name. There was work to be done. The first walk of the evening was 10 kms in the rain. The second walk started just after 9pm the rain was pretty much done it was misty and quiet with hardly anyone on the street. It also seemed a little warmer than recent nights  So not as unpleasant as you might think.

My sincerest thanks to all who sent messages of encouragement  last night.

Day 17

415 ks down and only 10 ks shy of the day 17 target. It was another good day for donations with many thanks to Patricia Delamere and Michael Adams. It appears that my sisters Midnight Oil inspired post was a hit.

There could be opportunities for more Oils references in the next few days with "Cold Cold Change" and "Arctic World" being distinct possibilities. Still I have been feeling like the "King of the Mountain" for the last few days and hopefully my "Dreamworld" is not about to end!

Day 16

389 kms down chasing 400 for Day 16. The legs are feeling better although I seem to have blisters on my blisters! All in all I am feeling good and my confidence in completing the goal grows by the day.

Big thanks For my day 16 backers Ian White, Adrienne Liddell and Wendy Frew. I can’t remember the last time I saw Wendy but am guessing it was Epworth Park Tennis Courts circa 1985.

Day 15

Wow I cant believe it's over two weeks already. Thanks to Suzanne Houweling for your Day 15 donation. Another day another 25ks. Actually it was 24.8 last night and I was running on very tired legs to try and reach 25 ks before midnight. We reamin 15kms short of our day 15 target today. The really good news is the shin pain is almost completely gone!

Day 14

A busy day 14 saw me starting the evening walk just after 8pm with only 4.8 ks completed. I was able to put in 21.3ks ending just after midnight.

A big thank you to Steve Torrez for his donation late on day 13. Day 14 saw a donation from Adrian Heard a lifetime friend and fellow graduate from The Narrabeen High class of 1988. Speaking of Narrabeen High, I hear Mrs Calil's year 9 English class have shown an interest in my fundraiser. Thank you so much, Just knowing that people are interested is a massive help to me. Be kind to each other and listen to your teacher.

Day 13

310 Kms down chasing a day 13 Target of 325. Had an enjoyable Sunday Morning 11km walk with my old school mate and 1000 in Forty donor Clinton Scott. Its always a pleasure to talk with Clint and nice to have some company as well. Got out to a late start for the evening walk and finished with 23kms for the day.

Day 12

24.95 kms clocked by the stroke of midnight. Irene added to our donations taking us to $2401. Thanks to you and all who have made a donation to date.

We remain 13 Kms behind the day 12 target but hope to eat into that this week. Manny has been amazing doing 6-10 ks most days. He usually has enough gas in the tank to drag me to the finish line not bad for someone who is 105 in dog years. Manny has clocked up at least 100ks in the last 12 days.

Day 11

Best Donation day everrrrr!

My sister Karen also known as the cheerleader in chief yesterday emailed her friends who don't use facebook and secured most of the $724 in donations that came through yesterday. So many donations I have not yet had the chance to message them all individually. A big thank you to Tanya, Tim, Sally, B, Kristin, Nikki, Trevor, Jane, Jen, Patrick, and Anna.

Anna's donation comes with a matching gift from Macquarie Bank. It would be nice to see some of those come through from Westpac as well....

Anyhoo the biggest thanks of the day definitely goes to my sister Karen. Karens are getting a bad rap these days but you won't see my sister harassing unsuspecting retail staff no no no. When she is not doing media work she is spreading the news about my harebrained plan to walk 1000 kilometres in 40 days.

21 ks were added to the total on day 11 I was busy during the day yesterday and had to play catchup at night. mandatory stops for dinner, putting the kids to bed and the last 20 minutes of Cronulla V Broncos meant I was out of time come midnight. Cronulla is not my team but how good is Wade Graham?

Day 10

28.5 kms today and the new shoes seem to be helping with the shin problem. Got a few blisters happening but I will take blisters over shin splints any day.

With 1 quarter of the time gone I am sitting 9kms behind the 250 km target and the WWR is 25.3. Donations are stuck at $1625 but there were some encouraging comments on Facebook.

Day 9

Another day another 27ks in the rear view mirror
212 kms completed against a day 9 target of 225.
The required daily walk rate is 25.42. Where is Glenn Maxwell when you need him?

Yesterday I finally broke out a new pair of sneakers that my lovely wife bought for my birthday. If anyone out there works in marketing I am happy to consider a sponsorship deal from Asics who have provided 90% of my sports shoes for the last 30 years....

Day 8

185 kms down against a day 8 target of 200. The gap is narrowing. The left shin is still giving me some grief and there was some swelling last night. Ice packs and some rest have it looking and feeling better this morning.

Anyone seen Peter Pan Lately? The part where Tinkerbell is dying and needs the audience to say I believe in fairies? Long haul fundraising is a similar deal. A big thank you to Jenni for reaching into her wallet and saying “I believe in Richie”

Day 7

1 week in I am a little behind the day 7 Target of 175. I managed to miss the worst of the rain in the last two days and have been sticking to built up areas where hopefully there are less trees, powerlines etc.

Big thanks to Clint who kept the donations moving

Day 6

A 22..5 k walk last night was only partially captured in the Day 6 numbers.  Day 7 is the day to watch.

Day 5

A better day but beaten by the clock again. The good news is my shin is holding up and the target is still in reach.  Thanks to Amanda for another donation.

Had some rain during my walks last night and it looks like there is more to come.

Day 4

Numbers tell the story. This was the day. I was meant to reach 100ks. I was time poor and sore. Feeling much better at the start of day 5 and am eager to get back in front.

Thanks Tanya, Kealani and Ken for your donations yesterday. Kealani is our first international donor and I would not hesitate to recommend Ken to anyone who needs an accountant.

Day 3

Numbers down a bit today. Due to work commitments. Got started late kicking a soccer ball with my 9 year old. He did his bit for the cause by kicking the ball as Dara away from dad as possible. Walks continued until midnight but 25 kms was beyond my reach.

Movie night with the boys tonight will probably mean I am short again today. Left shin starting to be a problem which hopefully can be managed with some go faster tape and the odd Panadol.

Day 2

Started the day with slight pain in my lower left shin. Rested up until the kids were at school and also had some work on. Took Manny for a quick 5ks in the morning and squeezed in another 5 before school pickup. 9pm - 12pm was catch up time  getting me to 28.7k for the day. Highlight of the day. Seeing a fox near Mater Maria.

Day 1

I wanted a big day 1. Started at midnight and did 10 kms with Manny the ever-young German Pinscher. At 9am I did 16ks around Narrabeen lake and out to Pittwater Rd.

Did an extra 2 kms while the kids were at swimming and by the time my normal activities were done the apple watch had recorded 33.5 kms and 40967 steps.

A big thank you to the sponsors who chipped in before I had even started. It was really encouraging to have $1157 in donations before the feet hit the pavement.

I'm doing something sporty to support Mission Australia!

2020 has challenged our image as the lucky country. For those of us that still have work it still is. Unfortunately more and more Australians are becoming the financial victims of the bush fires and COVID19.

Loss of work and livelihood is driving more Australians into financial distress. The flow on effects can be devastating. Homelessness, mental health issues, substance abuse domestic violence and suicide to name  a few. Financial distress can tear families apart.

Having lived my life as a lucky Australian for 49 years I have decided that it’s time for me to give back as best I can. My commitment is to walk 1000 kilometres in 40 days to raise funds for Mission Australia.

Can I cover an average of 25 kilometres per day? Hand on heart I am not sure. I have been doing plenty of prep but preparation can only do so much. One thing that will inspire me to complete this goal is the support of other lucky Australians. This can be financially by donating via the fund raising page on Mission Australia. If you are  feeling the pinch, positive comments, likes shares and follows are all helpful.

Please join me on a journey to make more people feel a part of the lucky country.
